HRBR Layout has a lot of large, long occupied family houses, and one of the moves we are asked to do in this area is the split. A son or daughter setting up their own home, a family dividing a house between two addresses, sometimes a parent moving to a smaller place while the main house continues. Whatever the reason, the job is not a relocation. It is a partial move out of a house that will still be lived in afterwards, and that makes it materially different to run. The critical thing is that the house is not empty at the end. On an ordinary move you can work room by room and anything still standing is still to be loaded. On a split, half of what is in every room is staying, so the crew cannot work by room at all. They work by list. That means the list has to exist before we arrive, and it has to be specific, because "the spare wardrobe" means nothing to a crew who have never been in your house. We label at survey with stickers rather than trusting anybody's memory, and it takes an extra hour that saves an argument. Two pieces of practical advice. Decide the contested items before moving day rather than on it, because there is almost always one almirah that two people assumed was theirs, and a crew standing by while a family works that out is expensive. And expect two vehicles or two trips, since the destinations are rarely near each other.

Label with stickers, not with lists on paper. A written list is read by one person and interpreted by five, and the loft is where it always breaks down. A coloured sticker on every item that is leaving is unambiguous, and anybody in the crew can act on it without asking. We bring the stickers. Walk the house with us and do it at survey. Photograph the rooms before the split, particularly if the division is sensitive. Families remember what was where differently once a house has been changed, and a set of pictures taken the week before removes an entire category of disagreement that otherwise surfaces months later. It is a precaution nobody regrets taking.
