Frequently Asked Questions

The Survey Is the Whole Job, and Most People Skip It

Every problem on a moving day traces back to somebody not knowing how much there was. A survey means a person counting, either standing in your house or on a slow video walk through where you open the cupboards and the loft. It is not a phone call asking how many bedrooms you have, because room count is a poor predictor of volume and always has been.

A two bedroom flat belonging to a family who've lived there eight years routinely holds more than a three bedroom flat somebody moved into last year. What fills a vehicle isn't the furniture, it's the loft, the storeroom, the kitchen and the accumulated boxes nobody has opened since the last move. Those four are where every underestimate hides.

So the survey decides the vehicle, the crew size and the material, and those three decide whether the day finishes at four in the afternoon or at nine at night. If a mover is willing to give you a firm figure without looking, ask yourself what happens on the day when they turn out to be wrong, because the answer is usually a second vehicle and a second charge.

What a Written Quote Should Actually Contain

One figure covering labour, packing material, transport, loading and unloading. That's it. If any of those four sits outside the number, you don't have a quote, you have a starting position.

Ask three questions of any mover, including us, and get the answers in writing. Is material included or billed separately. Does the figure cover loading and unloading or only transport. And what size vehicle is coming, and what happens if a second one is needed. A quote that won't answer those is a hook rather than a price, and most of the unpleasant surprises in this trade live in exactly those three gaps.

The vehicle size question is the one nobody thinks to ask and it matters most. A mover who sends something too small either does two trips and charges for the second, or overloads one, and neither is what you agreed to. Get the size stated in the quote.

How a Full House Shift Runs, Hour by Hour

Packing usually starts the day before on anything larger than a one bedroom. Kitchens take far longer than people expect, glass and crockery are wrapped individually rather than in bundles, and a household that has its packing finished the evening before gets a completely different quality of moving day from one that doesn't.

On the day the crew arrives, lays floor runners, pads the doorframes and dismantles the beds and wardrobes. Furniture goes into the vehicle first because it defines the load, then the heavy boxes low and forward, then the light and awkward things filling above. The load is built and strapped in layers rather than stacked to fill space, which is slower and is why a properly loaded vehicle arrives with everything where it was put.

At the far end it reverses, and the order matters as much as it did at the start. Furniture placed first so there's somewhere for everything else to go, then the boxes into their marked rooms. We set up the kitchen and one bedroom before anything else, because those two are what make a house liveable on the first night. Everything else can sit in a labelled carton until tomorrow without anybody suffering.

Where You Can Save Money and Where You Should Not

The biggest lever you have is throwing things away before you pay to move them. Volume is what you're buying, and an old mattress or a broken cupboard costs the same to transport as something you actually want. That single decision moves a quote more than any negotiation will.

The second is self packing your soft goods. Clothes, books, bedding and shoes in your own cartons is a real saving and any decent mover will quote lower for a part packed job. What you should not self pack is glass, crockery, mirrors, televisions and anything with a screen, because those are the items that break and a carton you packed yourself is one no mover can take responsibility for. That isn't a technicality invented to sell you packing, it's how liability works everywhere.

Insurance is the one people cut first and should cut last. On a short local move with careful packing the risk is genuinely small and skipping it is defensible if money is tight. On a long distance move it isn't, because the cover costs a small fraction of replacing a fridge and a television.

What Home Shifting Costs

JobPriceWhat decides it
Single room, shared flat or a few items₹2,999 onwardsThe floor price. Common for students, bachelors and one person moving out of a share.
1 BHK household₹3,500 – ₹6,500Floor level and lift access decide where in the band it lands.
2 BHK household₹6,000 – ₹10,500The commonest job we quote. Lofts and storerooms are what move it upward.
3 BHK household₹9,000 – ₹16,000Dismantling hours drive this more than the carry does.
4 BHK, villa or an independent houseAfter SurveyQuoted on volume rather than room count, because room count stops being useful here.
Part packed job, you pack the soft goods₹3,500 – ₹6,500Genuine saving on a 1 BHK. You pack clothes and books, we pack the breakables.

Local moves start at ₹2,999. Interstate work is charged on distance bands of ₹15 to ₹28 per KM depending on the distance, quoted separately from the load so you can see both figures.

What Home Shifting Does Not Include

Worth reading before you book. A mover who tells you this afterwards has cost you a day.

  • We do not cover cartons you packed yourself, because nobody saw what went in or how it was wrapped. Leave the breakables to us even on a tight budget.
  • We do not disconnect or reconnect split air conditioners, gas hobs or anything needing a licensed trade. Book those for the day before and the day after.
  • We do not do plumbing beyond a simple screw fitting. A new tap or a cut pipe is a plumber's job and worth booking separately.
  • We do not dispose of, sell or donate what you leave behind. We are movers rather than a clearance service, and it is better said now.
  • We do not decide where your things live in the new house. Unpacking means cartons emptied and contents placed in the right room, not a house arranged for you.
  • We do not carry jewellery, documents or cash. Those travel with you, in a bag that never goes near the vehicle.

More Questions About Home Shifting

Do I really need a survey?

For anything above a single room, yes. Room count predicts volume badly, and the loft, storeroom and kitchen are where every underestimate hides. A video walk through works fine if you do it slowly and open the cupboards, and it saves you the visit.

How long does a 2 BHK move take?

A day, comfortably, if the packing was finished the evening before and the access is clear at both ends. Where it runs long is a booked lift slot that started late, a stair carry nobody mentioned, or packing that began on the morning. The first of those three is the usual culprit.

What does house shifting cost?

A 1 BHK is Rs 3,500 to Rs 6,500, a 2 BHK Rs 6,000 to Rs 10,500 and a 3 BHK Rs 9,000 to Rs 16,000, with single rooms and small loads from Rs 2999. Anything larger than a 3 BHK is quoted after a survey rather than guessed at.

Can I pack some of it myself to save money?

Yes, and the sensible split is that you pack clothes, books, bedding and shoes while we pack glass, crockery, mirrors and screens. That keeps the saving real and keeps responsibility clear on exactly the items that break. What we cannot do is stand behind a carton we did not pack.

Which room do you unpack first?

The kitchen and one bedroom, unless you tell us otherwise. Those two are what make a house liveable on the first night, and everything else can sit in a labelled carton until tomorrow without anybody suffering for it.

What is the single best thing I can do before the crew arrives?

Throw away what you already know you do not want, and finish the packing the night before if we are only doing part of it. Volume is what you are paying for, and an old mattress costs the same to move as something you actually like.

Do you take the packing material away afterwards?

Yes, on the same day, where you have booked unpacking. A three bedroom move produces a startling volume of cardboard and a flat has nowhere to put it, so leaving it behind is not really finishing the job.
